Training and award

Passing is one step. Eligibility is another.

PECB Certificate Holder in ISO 31000 Foundation

Complete the training, pass the examination and apply to PECB. Its application and Code of Ethics requirements still apply. No professional experience is required. This is an individual certificate, not organisational ISO certification or the professional Risk Manager credential.

Foundation holders are exempt from the CPD/annual-fee maintenance requirements in PECB’s current policy.

The eight principles

A useful way to think about risk.

Integrated

Make risk thinking part of ordinary decisions, not a separate annual exercise.

Structured and comprehensive

Use a consistent approach so decisions can be understood and compared.

Customised

Fit the approach to your objectives, operating context and resources.

Inclusive

Bring relevant perspectives into the decision at the right time.

Dynamic

Revisit risks as conditions, assumptions and objectives change.

Best available information

Use useful evidence and make its uncertainty and limitations explicit.

Human and cultural factors

Consider how behaviour and organisational culture affect decisions.

Continual improvement

Learn from outcomes and strengthen how risk is managed.

Apply your learning

A decision worth examining.

Original fictional example—not a client case study, official PECB question or compliance determination. Nothing is scored, stored or sent.

A service provider is changing a critical supplier.

A New Zealand service provider plans to move a customer-facing system to a new supplier. A faster migration may reduce cost, but interruption during the change could affect service commitments. Before choosing a treatment, the team needs to agree what it is protecting and how a decision will be made.

Start with the decision

Write the objective, stakeholders and boundary. Ask what information would change the decision and whose judgement is needed.

Make uncertainty visible

Record assumptions, evidence gaps and consequences. A neat colour in a risk register is not evidence that uncertainty has been resolved.

Give the action an owner

Compare options, name an accountable person and define what successful treatment would look like. Record the reasoning.

Set a review trigger

Choose a date or event that requires a fresh decision—for example a failed migration test, a changed service commitment or a supplier incident.

What would you challenge before approving the plan?

Ask whether the decision criteria are agreed, whether the evidence is sufficient and whether anyone has accepted responsibility for follow-up. Escalation should be tied to authority and objectives, not simply the largest number in a spreadsheet.

New Zealand context

Read the requirement behind the reference.

PSR GOV 2 calls for a risk-management approach “in accordance with the New Zealand standard ISO 31000:2018”. This security-governance reference is not a requirement for every organisation or individual to take a PECB course. Check the framework’s applicability to your organisation.

Before you decide

Your questions, answered.

How much is the ISO 31000 Foundation course in NZ?

Self-Study is NZ$470.00 per learner. Official materials, the exam voucher, one included retake and the application fee are included. Prices in NZD. No GST is added for New Zealand billing addresses. Australian billing addresses attract 10% GST. Contact us to confirm access and enrolment arrangements. Foundation certificate holders are exempt from PECB’s professional certification maintenance requirements.

What is the risk-management standard in New Zealand?

NZS ISO 31000:2025 is New Zealand’s identical adoption of ISO 31000:2018. Standards New Zealand published it on 17 October 2025, superseding AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009. The course addresses the international 2018 edition; it does not establish compliance with every NZ regulatory or contractual obligation.

Is ISO 31000 still valid, and is a new version coming?

ISO 31000:2018 remains the published international edition. As checked on 11 October 2026, the replacement project is at Committee Draft stage 30.60. That is development work, not a published replacement. No final publication date is shown on the ISO project page checked.

Can my organisation be ISO 31000 certified?

ISO 31000 is guidance, not a requirements standard for organisational ISO certification. Individuals can pursue PECB risk-management certificates or professional credentials. Training, passing an examination and receiving an individual credential do not certify an organisation.

Can I sit the examination from New Zealand?

Yes, PECB offers online remotely proctored English examinations. You must meet its identification, device, internet and permitted-material requirements and book an available appointment. Check your selected time zone and NZ daylight saving. No particular appointment is guaranteed.

Is the examination open book?

No. Foundation is closed book. The English exam has 40 multiple-choice questions over 1 hour with a 70% pass mark. Open book does not mean unrestricted internet access or help from another person.

How does the included retake work?

For Self-Study and eLearning, the examination and included retake must be used within 12 months of purchase. The first retake can be taken no earlier than 15 days after a failed first attempt. This examination deadline is separate from learning-material access.

Do I need experience?

No prior course or professional experience is required for this Foundation pathway. To receive the certificate, complete the training, pass the examination and meet PECB’s application and Code of Ethics requirements. Purchase alone does not award the certificate.

What credential can I receive?

The award is PECB Certificate Holder in ISO 31000 Foundation. PECB reviews and issues it after the applicable requirements are met. It is not the professional Risk Manager credential, and Foundation does not require ongoing maintenance under PECB’s current policy.

Is AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 still current?

It has been superseded in New Zealand by NZS ISO 31000:2025. Australia uses AS ISO 31000:2018. Older documents may still refer to the joint 2009 edition; check which version an applicable contract or policy actually specifies.

Is ISO 31000 training mandatory in New Zealand?

ISO 31000 itself does not impose a universal requirement to take a training course. PSR GOV 2 references an ISO 31000 risk-management approach for organisations subject to that framework. Sector, employer and contractual requirements should be assessed separately.

Is there a free ISO 31000 course?

This official PECB course is paid. Our NZ standards guide includes a free original cross-reference worksheet, not an official PECB course or a free copy of the copyrighted standard. No ISO 31000 Labs add-on is included in this offer.
