How it helps you
What you can do after the course.
Run an AI risk programme, not a checklist
Set objectives and scope, define risk evaluation and acceptance criteria, then monitor and review the programme. These are the activities PECB counts towards the credential.
Work across frameworks
Map the NIST AI RMF, the EU AI Act and the standards around them, so one AI risk register can answer questions framed in any of them.
Reason from real incidents
PECB has participants analyse real-world AI risk scenarios from the MIT AI Risk Repository, rather than invented examples.
Show a credential that matches your experience
PECB awards four tiers, from Provisional Manager to Senior Lead. The tier tells a buyer or employer how much AI risk work you have actually done.
What it is built on
NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act and MIT AI Risk Repository.
PECB says the course is “based on leading frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the EU AI Act, and insights from the MIT AI Risk Repository”. The candidate handbook’s first exam domain also expects knowledge of the international standards around them.
Frameworks and standards the Lead AI Risk Manager course draws on
Framework or standard
Role in the course
What it is
NIST AI Risk Management Framework
Foundation of the course
A voluntary United States framework for managing AI risk. PECB names it as a basis of the course and a framework you will apply.
EU AI Act
Foundation of the course
The European Union’s AI regulation. PECB names it as a basis of the course and a framework you will apply.
MIT AI Risk Repository
Source of scenarios
PECB uses real-world AI risk scenarios from it for analysis exercises.
ISO/IEC 42001, ISO/IEC 22989 and ISO/IEC 23894
Covered in exam domain 1
Named in the handbook’s knowledge statement for domain 1, alongside the NIST AI RMF. The course is not based on ISO/IEC 23894.
What is ISO/IEC 23894?
ISO/IEC 23894:2023 is ISO and IEC’s guidance on risk management for artificial intelligence. It is guidance, not a certifiable management-system standard. Lead AI Risk Manager is not based on it: PECB built the course on the NIST AI RMF, the EU AI Act and the MIT AI Risk Repository. The handbook lists ISO/IEC 23894 among the standards a candidate should know for domain 1, so expect it in the exam’s knowledge base. If you need a certifiable AI management system, that is ISO/IEC 42001.
New Zealand context
AI regulation as the exam frames it.
The handbook’s first domain covers AI regulation “across major regions, including the EU AI Act, GDPR, UK. and US. AI laws, sector-specific regulations, and emerging frameworks in Asia, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand”. So New Zealand is in scope for the exam, alongside the EU, UK and US rules that a New Zealand organisation selling overseas may also meet. The handbook does not set out how deep that New Zealand coverage goes, so do not treat the course as advice on New Zealand law. For local guidance, read MBIE’s responsible AI guidance for businesses and the Privacy Commissioner’s AI guidance.
Organisational context, AI risk governance and AI risk identification.
Day 3
Analysis, evaluation and treatment of AI risks.
Day 4
AI risk monitoring and reporting, training and awareness, and optimising AI risk performance.
Day 5

Every tier takes the same exam (“PECB Certified Lead AI Risk Manager Exam, or equivalent”) and requires signing the PECB Code of Ethics. Passing the exam does not by itself make you a Lead AI Risk Manager. If you pass without the experience, PECB awards the Provisional Manager credential, and you can apply to upgrade as your experience grows.
Activities that count, in PECB’s words: “Determining the AI risk management objectives and scope; Performing AI risk assessment; Developing an AI risk management program; Defining AI risk evaluation and risk acceptance criteria; Evaluating risk treatment options for AI risks; Monitoring and reviewing the AI risk management program.”
Certifications are valid for three years and are kept active with CPD hours and PECB’s annual maintenance fee. The first year’s fee is included in this course where it applies. The Provisional tier needs no maintenance.
Who it is for
Who should take this course.
Risk, IT and security professionals
You own or contribute to the risk register and need AI risks treated with the same discipline as other enterprise risks.
Data scientists, engineers and AI developers
You build or deploy models and need to identify and document risks such as bias, security weaknesses and lack of transparency.
Consultants, advisers and managers
You advise on AI, give legal or ethical advice, or oversee AI projects and need a shared method and vocabulary.
PECB lists risk professionals, IT and security professionals, data scientists, data engineers and AI developers, consultants, legal and ethical advisors, managers overseeing AI projects, and executives.
Builds and runs a certifiable AI management system. Choose it when your organisation wants ISO/IEC 42001 certification; Lead AI Risk Manager goes deeper on the risk process itself.
The technical AI credential: machine learning, deep learning and AI governance.

Before you decide
Your questions, answered.
What is the best AI risk management certification?+
It depends on what you need to prove. Lead AI Risk Manager suits people who run the AI risk process itself, using the NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act. ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer suits people building a certifiable AI management system. EU AI Governance Professional focuses on the EU AI Act. Choose by the work you do, not the title.
What is the ISO standard for AI risk management?+
ISO/IEC 23894:2023 gives guidance on risk management for AI. It is guidance, not a certifiable standard. The certifiable AI management system standard is ISO/IEC 42001. Both appear in the Lead AI Risk Manager handbook’s first exam domain.
Is the Lead AI Risk Manager course based on ISO/IEC 23894?+
No. PECB built it on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the EU AI Act and the MIT AI Risk Repository. ISO/IEC 23894 is named, with ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO/IEC 22989, in the knowledge statement for exam domain 1, so it is covered, but the course is not based on it.
What experience do I need to become a PECB Certified Lead AI Risk Manager?+
Five years of professional experience, at least two of them in AI risk management, and 300 hours of AI risk management activity, plus the exam and signing the PECB Code of Ethics. The AI Risk Manager tier needs two years (one in AI risk) and 200 hours; Senior Lead needs ten years (seven in AI risk) and 1,000 hours.
What happens if I pass the exam without five years of experience?+
PECB awards the tier your experience supports. With no qualifying experience you receive PECB Certified AI Risk Provisional Manager, which needs no maintenance. You can apply to upgrade to AI Risk Manager, Lead or Senior Lead once you meet those requirements.
How hard is the Lead AI Risk Manager exam, and is it open book?+
It is open book: 3 hours, 80 multiple-choice questions with three options each, and a 70% pass mark. Most questions (62.5%) test application, analysis and evaluation rather than recall, and some come in scenario sets of five. Non-native English speakers get 30 extra minutes.
How is Lead AI Risk Manager different from ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer?+
ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer teaches you to build and run an AI management system that an organisation can certify. Lead AI Risk Manager focuses on the AI risk process across frameworks such as the NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act. Many AI governance roles benefit from both.
How do I keep the certification active?+
PECB certifications are valid for three years. You keep them active by reporting CPD hours and paying PECB’s annual maintenance fee; the first year’s fee is included in this course where it applies. The Provisional tier needs no maintenance.
