Personal credential or company certification?

This is a professional learning pathway for individuals. An organisation’s AIMS certificate follows a separate, scoped certification-body assessment. Neither certifies that every AI output or product is safe. If your goal is organisational implementation, discuss an AIMS project rather than buying training as a substitute.

Who this course suits best

For the people making AI governance work.

  • AI governance and GRC leads: connect AI use to accountability, risk decisions and evidence.
  • Privacy and compliance professionals: work with technical teams on impacts, data use and governance responsibilities.
  • Product, technology and operations managers: organise ownership across AI development, procurement and use.
  • AIMS consultants and implementation teams: structure the management system, not just individual AI controls.

Choose for your responsibilities.

This is not a coding bootcamp or a prompt-engineering course. It is most useful when you need to organise and demonstrate how AI is managed.

General AIMS and ISO 42001 knowledge is expected. Explore the Foundation course in the catalogue if those concepts are new. A course can develop your knowledge; it cannot replace the experience evidence required for higher credentials.

What you will learn

Move from intent to accountable practice.

Understand and initiate

Identify the organisation’s AI activities, stakeholders and management-system boundary. Establish leadership responsibilities and a plan for the work.

Plan the AIMS

Work through AI risk and impact assessment, objectives and treatment decisions. Connect the Statement of Applicability to the controls the organisation needs.

Implement and operate

Translate decisions into responsibilities, documented procedures, awareness and operating controls throughout the AI system life cycle.

Evaluate and improve

Review performance, address findings and prepare the management system for an independent certification audit.

Six areas in the published exam blueprint

Use this as a view of coverage, not a prediction of difficulty or a personalised study allocation.

  • AIMS principles17 of 80 (21.25%)
  • AIMS requirements5 of 80 (6.25%)
  • Implementation planning20 of 80 (25%)
  • Implementation18 of 80 (22.5%)
  • Monitoring and measurement10 of 80 (12.5%)
  • Improvement and audit preparation10 of 80 (12.5%)

PECB’s certification scheme, page 22 publishes these counts. Bar lengths use the full 80-question total; this is a syllabus chart, not a market trend or pass-rate claim.

AI governance in New Zealand

Apply the learning in its real context.

The practical connections below are Aegentra’s interpretation of the cited guidance, not a claim that a government agency endorses this course.

Responsible adoption

MBIE published its AI Strategy and voluntary business guidance in July 2025. For a learning project, that makes governance and accountability useful starting points: who can approve an AI use, what evidence they need and who checks the result.

MBIE: responsible AI guidance · New Zealand AI Strategy

Personal information

The Privacy Commissioner says the Privacy Act applies when using AI and recommends a privacy impact assessment before starting, with updates as needed. An AIMS can help organise responsibilities; it does not replace that assessment or demonstrate legal compliance by itself.

Privacy Commissioner: AI guidance

Public-sector requirements

The Public Service AI Framework guides agencies, while the Algorithm Charter records commitments by its government signatories. Neither should be presented as a blanket ISO 42001 certification requirement for every business. Suppliers should check the buyer’s actual procurement and assurance requirements.

Public Service AI Framework · Algorithm Charter

Applicable law, contracts and sector requirements need their own assessment. No course, individual credential or management-system certificate guarantees tender acceptance.

See the implementation work

One AI use. Four connected decisions.

A fictional recruitment workflow shows how an inventory, impact assessment, control decision and human-oversight evidence connect. Original educational material—not a client case study, PECB exam question or complete implementation template.

Know the AI use before writing the policy.

A fictional New Zealand recruitment business wants an AI tool to draft summaries of candidate CVs. A person will decide whom to shortlist. Begin with the intended use and who is accountable, rather than classifying every AI tool as the same risk.

Use and boundary
Draft summaries for recruiters; no automatic rejection or ranking.
Information and parties
CVs, applicants, recruiters and the tool supplier.
Questions to resolve
Where is the data processed? Is it retained or reused? Who approves this use?

An inventory entry makes the use visible. It does not, by itself, authorise deployment.

Consider the people affected by an error.

A summary might omit relevant experience or introduce an unsupported statement. Ask how that could affect an applicant, not just whether the software remains available. Consider privacy, unequal treatment, transparency and routes for correction.

Potential impact
An applicant is overlooked because the summary misrepresents their experience.
Evidence to gather
Representative test cases, observed omissions and feedback from reviewers.
Decision needed
Can the use be justified with safeguards, or should it be changed or stopped?

This is an illustrative impact discussion, not a completed privacy assessment, legal opinion or universal risk score.

Explain the control decision.

For this example, the team proposes a narrow permitted-use policy, supplier checks and a requirement to compare each summary with the source CV. Record the reasons for selected controls in the AIMS Statement of Applicability and check the complete standard when developing it.

Proposed safeguards
Restrict data inputs and access; set retention requirements; review supplier terms.
Human responsibility
A trained recruiter checks source material and remains accountable for the decision.
Working records
Control rationale, owner, approval, implementation status and linked evidence.

These example safeguards are not a complete Annex A mapping or a certification-ready Statement of Applicability.

Show that review changes what happens.

A tick box saying “human reviewed” is weak evidence if reviewers simply accept the output. Trial the workflow, record corrections and give reviewers a practical route to pause use when results are unreliable.

Test
Give reviewers an inaccurate summary and observe whether they detect and correct it.
Evidence
Review records, corrections, training and decisions to pause or change the workflow.
Follow-up
An owner monitors issues and rechecks the process when the tool or its use changes.

Human oversight needs authority, competence and evidence. A course certificate cannot establish that those safeguards are working.

Nothing is submitted, stored or scored. The example supports discussion; use the full ISO/IEC 42001 standard and appropriate professional advice for actual implementation.

Exam and professional certification

Knowledge first. Evidence for the credential.

The assessment combines standalone and scenario-based questions. Open-book preparation means knowing how to use the permitted references, not memorising answers or obtaining exam dumps.

Source: candidate handbook, page 15. Each tier also requires the applicable exam or accepted equivalent and ethical commitments. PECB decides whether your evidence qualifies.

PECB’s published scheme includes AI governance and compliance programmes among possible project activities. That can be relevant to GRC or privacy work, but a job title or attendance certificate alone does not establish qualifying hours. Keep records of the work, dates, role and references.

Confirm the retake deadline before booking.

PECB’s current exam policy sets a 12-month included cycle from purchase for Self-Study and eLearning, including the first exam, one free retake, the certification application and first-year Annual Maintenance Fee. Its course page still describes a different retake starting point. Confirm the applicable voucher dates in writing before booking.

Certification also carries ongoing maintenance requirements. Check the current policy for your credential rather than assuming course completion or course CPD credits maintain it indefinitely.

Practise the reasoning—not remembered answers.

Aegentra Labs

Practise interpreting scenarios, test your reasoning and learn from explanations. Labs questions are independently authored, not official PECB exam questions or exam dumps.

Explore ISO 42001 practice questions

Try three original discussion questions.

A team buys an AI assistant. Is an acceptable-use policy enough to begin?

No. First understand the intended use, information involved, affected people, responsibilities and supplier arrangements. Then assess risks and impacts and decide what evidence and safeguards are needed. A policy is one part of that work.

A colleague passes the Lead Implementer exam. Is the organisation now ISO 42001 certified?

No. An individual exam and professional credential are separate from an organisation’s management-system certification. The latter requires a separate assessment and certification decision for the defined organisational scope.

What makes a human-review control more convincing than a signed checklist?

Evidence that a competent reviewer can detect a problem, change the output or decision, and escalate or stop use. Records should show the control operating, not only that somebody acknowledged a procedure.

These examples are freely readable here and do not represent the PECB exam. They do not award CPD, certification or a predicted pass result.

Before you decide

Your questions, answered.

How much does ISO 42001 Lead Implementer training cost in NZ?

The draft shows NZ$1,050.00 per learner for Self-Study and NZ$1,053.86 for recorded PECB eLearning, before applicable tax. The course-plus-two-hour consultancy package is quoted separately. Bookings are not open.

Can I include Aegentra Labs?

Yes. Add optional Aegentra Labs for NZ$120.00 for 12 months to either format. The combined draft total is NZ$1,170.00 with Self-Study or NZ$1,173.86 with eLearning, before applicable tax. 10-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with Aegentra Labs. Applies to the Labs add-on, not the PECB course. Labs is independently authored practice, not official PECB exam content.

Is the official exam included, and what happens if I fail?

PECB’s current exam policy sets a 12-month included cycle from purchase for Self-Study and eLearning, including the first exam, one free retake, the certification application and first-year Annual Maintenance Fee. Its course page still describes a different retake starting point. Confirm the applicable voucher dates in writing before booking.

What is the exam format?

The published English assessment is open book: 80 multiple-choice questions over three hours, with a 70% pass mark. Only permitted reference materials may be used; open book is not unrestricted internet access. Check the current handbook and exam instructions for your sitting.

Do I need AI experience before taking the course?

PECB expects general knowledge of AIMS concepts and ISO/IEC 42001. Higher professional credential tiers also require relevant work and project experience; taking the course does not waive those requirements. If the terminology is unfamiliar, discuss whether Foundation is a better starting point.

How do I become a PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

Complete your preparation, pass the applicable exam, and apply to PECB for the tier whose experience and ethical requirements you meet. The full Lead Implementer tier requires five years of professional experience, including two in AI management, and 300 project hours. PECB assesses the evidence and decides eligibility.

Is ISO 42001 mandatory in New Zealand?

Do not assume a universal certification requirement. MBIE’s responsible-AI guidance is voluntary, while applicable laws and specific contracts still matter. A customer may ask for defined assurance or certification. Check the actual requirement; neither this course nor an ISO certificate automatically proves legal compliance or guarantees a contract.

How does ISO 42001 differ from ISO 27001?

ISO 42001 concerns an AI management system; ISO 27001 concerns an information security management system. AI governance asks questions about intended use, impacts and oversight that are not answered solely by securing information. An organisation may coordinate the systems, but their scopes and certification decisions remain distinct.

Does this course certify my company or an AI product?

No. This is professional training for individuals. Organisational certification is a separate scoped assessment by a certification body. Neither a personal credential nor a management-system certificate is a blanket guarantee that an AI product is safe, lawful or suitable for every use.

Can I study online from anywhere in New Zealand?

Self-Study and recorded eLearning are self-paced online formats, not scheduled classrooms. Any consultancy session is arranged separately, with the date, NZST or NZDT time, consultant and focus confirmed before booking. Aegentra Academy does not offer physical classroom or onsite training.

Is consultancy training a full live PECB course?

No. The quoted option combines the chosen PECB course with two practical hours with an Aegentra consultant. It focuses on applying the standard in an organisation and does not replace the full syllabus, an exam or an implementation engagement.

Is this an NZQA qualification?

This page describes a PECB professional certification pathway, not an NZQA-approved programme, NZ qualifications-framework level or automatic professional licence. Check the particular qualification or credential an employer or buyer requires.

Can my employer pay, and is GST included?

Employer invoicing, tax treatment and the final amount payable must be confirmed before NZ bookings open. No tax exemption or no-GST claim is made in this preview. A written booking confirmation should identify the learner, payer, currency, inclusions and deadlines.
