How it helps you

What you can do after the course.

Explain each change to an auditor

You will be able to say which clauses changed, how much, and what evidence a 2026 audit is likely to look for, using the same clause references your certification body uses.

Plan the update to your QMS

The second objective PECB sets is practical: plan and implement the changes an existing quality management system needs. That means a short, prioritised list instead of a rewrite.

Brief leadership on quality culture

Clause 5.1.1 now asks top management to promote quality culture and ethical behaviour, and clause 7.3 asks staff to be aware of it. The course gives you the wording to explain what that asks of leaders.

Add a current credential

Passing the exam leads to the PECB Certified ISO 9001:2026 Transition credential, with no experience requirement and no maintenance fee.

ISO 9001:2015 vs ISO 9001:2026

What changed from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026.

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, according to Global ACI and UKAS. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024, the amendment that added climate change to clauses 4.1 and 4.2.

The table compares ISO 9001:2015 (with Amendment 1:2024) and ISO 9001:2026. Clause wording follows Global ACI’s transition requirements (TECH-3-TR, section 3.1). The last column is UKAS’s own rating of the extent of change, from its High-Level Gap Analysis V1.0 of September 2026.

Global ACI’s assessment is that “the overall changes to the document are minimal”. UKAS says the most significant changes relate to interested parties, quality culture and ethical behaviour, risks and opportunities, planning of changes and management review. Climate change is not new in 2026: it arrived with Amendment 1:2024.

Transition deadlines

ISO 9001:2026 transition deadlines.

These dates come from Global ACI’s mandatory transition requirements for ISO 9001:2026 (TECH-3-TR 2029-09-30, issued 4 September 2026). They bind accreditation bodies that sign the Global ACI mutual recognition arrangement and the certification bodies they accredit. Global ACI expects organisations to find the changes “largely intuitive”.

MilestoneDate
Transition periodThree years from publication
Accreditation bodies ready to assessNo later than 31 March 2027
Certification bodies submit their transition declaration30 June 2027

New and initial certifications to ISO 9001:2026 onlyFrom 31 March 2028. No new ISO 9001:2015 certifications after this date
UK only: UKAS-accredited bodies stop accepting new ISO 9001:2015 applications16 March 2028 (UKAS counts 18 months from the publication date)
All certified organisations transitionedBy 30 September 2029. ISO 9001:2015 certificates are no longer valid after that

Certified organisations move to the 2026 edition at a surveillance audit, a recertification audit or a special transition audit, and remote audits are allowed. The certification body decides whether extra audit time is needed. New Zealand certification bodies are commonly accredited by JAS-ANZ, the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand. We could not read a JAS-ANZ transition notice, so confirm with your certification body which dates it applies to your certificate.

Passing the exam and applying leads to the PECB Certified ISO 9001:2026 Transition credential. PECB’s certification rules note that references, work experience and downgrades “do not apply for Foundation, Transition, and Provisional certificates”.

It is a separate credential. PECB lists “Quality professionals wishing to update their ISO 9001 certificates” in the audience, but its course page does not say whether the Transition credential updates or re-dates an existing PECB ISO 9001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor credential. Do not assume it does. PECB has published that answer for ISO 14001, not for ISO 9001; if it matters to you, email academy@aegentra.co.nz and we will ask PECB before you buy.

PECB’s certification maintenance policy says: “The following credentials do not require maintenance: Foundation, Provisional, and Transition.” There is no annual maintenance fee and no CPD reporting for the Transition credential.

Who it is for

Who should take this course.

Quality managers and QMS owners

You are responsible for moving a certified quality management system to ISO 9001:2026 before the September 2029 deadline and want a clear list of what to change.

Auditors, trainers and consultants

You maintain, audit or teach ISO 9001 and need to explain each change and its likely audit evidence.

Holders of ISO 9001 credentials

You hold an ISO 9001 Foundation, Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor credential and want to update your knowledge to the 2026 edition.

PECB lists: “Individuals seeking to remain up to date with the requirements of ISO 9001”, “Individuals responsible for transitioning a QMS from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026”, “Managers, auditors, trainers, and consultants involved in maintaining or auditing a QMS” and “Quality professionals wishing to update their ISO 9001 certificates”.

Before you decide

Your questions, answered.

Has ISO 9001:2026 been published yet?

Yes. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, according to Global ACI and UKAS. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024. Pages that still describe a draft or an expected September 2026 release are out of date.

What are the main changes in ISO 9001:2026?

The revision is targeted, not fundamental. UKAS rates these as significant: strengthened interested parties (4.2), quality culture and ethical behaviour in leadership (5.1.1) and awareness (7.3), separate actions for risks and for opportunities (6.1.2 and 6.1.3), three new items in planning of changes (6.3), and management review inputs that now “shall include” changes in interested parties’ needs (9.3.2). Annex B is removed.

When do certified organisations have to transition to ISO 9001:2026?

Under Global ACI’s mandatory requirements, every certified organisation must be transitioned, with a 2026 certificate issued, by 30 September 2029. After that date ISO 9001:2015 certificates are no longer valid. Confirm with your certification body which dates it applies to you.

Can we still certify to ISO 9001:2015?

For now, yes. Global ACI allows new and initial certifications to ISO 9001:2015 until 31 March 2028; after that, new certifications are to ISO 9001:2026 only. In the United Kingdom, UKAS-accredited bodies stop accepting new 2015 applications on 16 March 2028.

Do I need an ISO 9001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer certificate to take the Transition course?

No. PECB says: “There are no prerequisites to participating in this training course.” The credential also has no professional or QMS project experience requirement. Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 will make the course quicker, because it focuses on what changed.

Does the Transition credential replace or update my ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certificate?

PECB does not say. The PECB Certified ISO 9001:2026 Transition credential is awarded separately, and PECB’s course page does not state whether it updates or re-dates an existing ISO 9001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor credential. PECB has published that answer for ISO 14001 but not for ISO 9001. Email academy@aegentra.co.nz and we will ask PECB before you buy.

What is the ISO 9001:2026 Transition exam format?

One hour, 40 multiple-choice questions, closed book, taken online or on paper, in English or French. It has two domains: the differences between the main clauses of the two editions, and understanding, planning and implementing the changes. PECB has not published the pass mark on the pages we checked.

Is there an annual maintenance fee for the Transition credential?

No. PECB’s certification maintenance policy says Foundation, Provisional and Transition credentials do not require maintenance, so there is no annual maintenance fee and no CPD to report. The course price includes the exam, one free retake and the certification application fee.
