ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. This PECB course compares it with ISO 14001:2015 clause by clause, including the two new clauses, 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities and 6.3 Planning of changes, and ends with a one-hour exam. New certifications to the 2015 edition stop on 31 October 2027, five months before ISO 9001’s cut-off. Aegentra, an official PECB authorised training partner, sells it online as Self-Study for NZ$533.00, before applicable tax, with the exam and one free retake included.

How it helps you
What you can do after the course.
Explain the two new clauses
You will be able to explain stand-alone 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities and the new 6.3 Planning of changes, and what evidence an auditor may ask for under each.
Update your environmental context
Clause 4.1 now names broader environmental conditions, including climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity. The course shows you how that changes your context analysis.
Keep a 2015 exam pass usable
If you passed a PECB ISO 14001 exam on the 2015 edition but have not applied for certification, PECB’s deadline is 15 April 2027. After that, PECB says you need this Transition exam.
Plan the update to your EMS
PECB’s third objective is to plan and implement the changes an existing environmental management system needs, so you leave with a list of what to change and why.
ISO 14001:2015 vs ISO 14001:2026
What changed from ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026.
ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, according to PECB and UKAS. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024. PECB published this course and exam in English on 7 May 2026.
The table compares ISO 14001:2015 (with Amendment 1:2024) and ISO 14001:2026. Key changes follow Global ACI’s transition requirements (sections 3.1 and 3.2) and PECB’s course description. The last column is UKAS’s own rating, from its Gap Analysis Summary (Appendix A, Issue 1, 7 May 2026). ISO 14001 has more changes rated significant than ISO 9001, mostly in clauses 4, 6 and 8.

Annex A guidance
Guidance on use
Clarifies context, risks and opportunities and their links to other clauses, the life cycle perspective, and alignment with strategy, business processes and an integrated management system
Global ACI’s assessment is that “the overall changes to the document are minimal”, across approximately 700,000 accredited ISO 14001 certificates. PECB’s course highlights four themes: broader environmental conditions in the organisational context, the reinforced life cycle perspective, the newly formalised approach to managing change under clause 6.3, and the revised planning logic for risks and opportunities.
Transition deadlines
ISO 14001:2026 transition deadlines.
These dates come from Global ACI’s mandatory transition requirements for ISO 14001:2026 (TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30, issued 4 September 2026). They bind accreditation bodies that sign the Global ACI mutual recognition arrangement and the certification bodies they accredit. UKAS confirms the same end date for certified organisations.

“The new updates do not have an impact on your existing certification against ISO 14001 standard. If you have a valid ISO 14001 Implementer, Lead Implementer, Senior Lead Implementer or an ISO 14001 Auditor, Lead Auditor, or Senior Lead Auditor, you just need to maintain these certifications active by submitting CPDs and AMFs. However, we encourage certified individuals to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition course and exam, to update their knowledge, and report the course and exam as continuous professional development (CPDs) credits, as per the CPD Policy.”
“Candidates who have passed the ISO 14001 exams based on the ISO 14001:2015 version of the standard, can apply for certification until April 15, 2027, at the latest (1 year after the publication of the standard). After this date, candidates who would like to apply for the certification will have to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam, and the regular fee applies.”
Passing the exam and applying leads to the PECB Certified ISO 14001:2026 Transition credential. It sits alongside any ISO 14001 credential you already hold; PECB says existing credentials are unaffected, as quoted above.
PECB also says ISO 14001 Foundation and Provisional certificates are lifetime certificates, and that the updates to the standard do not affect them.
PECB’s certification maintenance policy says: “The following credentials do not require maintenance: Foundation, Provisional, and Transition.” There is no annual maintenance fee and no CPD reporting for the Transition credential.
Who it is for
Who should take this course.
Environmental managers and EMS owners
You are responsible for moving a certified environmental management system to ISO 14001:2026 before the April 2029 deadline.
Auditors, trainers and consultants
You maintain, audit or teach ISO 14001 and need to explain the new clauses and the revised ones.
Candidates with a 2015-edition exam pass
You passed a PECB ISO 14001 exam on the 2015 edition and have not applied for certification by 15 April 2027.
PECB lists the same audience as its ISO 9001 Transition course, with the EMS in place of the QMS, ending with “Environmental professionals wishing to update their ISO 14001 certificates”.
Running an integrated system? ISO 9001 also revised in 2026, with similar new requirements on planning of changes.

Before you decide
Your questions, answered.
When was ISO 14001:2026 published?+
ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, according to PECB and UKAS. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024.
What are the main changes in ISO 14001:2026?+
Two new clauses: a stand-alone 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities and 6.3 Planning of changes. UKAS also rates as significant the changes to context (4.1), which now names conditions such as climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity, interested parties (4.2), scope (4.3), environmental aspects with a reinforced life cycle perspective (6.1.2), operational planning and control (8.1) and continual improvement (10.1).
What is the ISO 14001:2026 transition deadline?+
Under Global ACI’s mandatory requirements, every certified organisation must be transitioned to ISO 14001:2026 by 30 April 2029. UKAS gives the same date. Confirm with your certification body which dates it applies to you.
When can certification bodies stop issuing ISO 14001:2015 certificates?+
Global ACI allows new and initial certifications to ISO 14001:2015 until 31 October 2027. From that date, new and initial certifications are to ISO 14001:2026 only. That is five months earlier than the equivalent ISO 9001 date.
Does ISO 14001:2026 affect my existing PECB ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer certificate?+
No, according to PECB. It says the updates “do not have an impact on your existing certification” and that holders of a valid ISO 14001 Implementer, Lead Implementer, Senior Lead Implementer, Auditor, Lead Auditor or Senior Lead Auditor credential “just need to maintain these certifications active by submitting CPDs and AMFs”. PECB encourages them to take the Transition course and exam and report it as CPD.
I passed a PECB ISO 14001 exam based on the 2015 edition. Can I still apply for certification?+
Yes, until 15 April 2027 at the latest, according to PECB. After that date PECB says you will have to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam, and the regular fee applies.
What is the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam format?+
One hour, 40 multiple-choice questions, closed book, taken online or on paper, in English or French. It has two domains: the differences between the main clauses of the two editions, and understanding, planning and implementing the changes. PECB has not published the pass mark on the pages we checked.
Are there prerequisites for the ISO 14001 Transition course?+
No. PECB lists no prerequisites, and the credential has no professional or EMS project experience requirement. You sign the PECB Code of Ethics when you apply. Knowing ISO 14001:2015 will make the course quicker, because it focuses on what changed.
